Physical Properties of Steel & its Financial Benefits

Steel has been used as an architecture support and as structural material for a variety of buildings for years. Steel has many different physical properties that make it ideal for these kinds of uses. Not until the later part of the 19th century, was Steel made economically in the United States. It has grown in popularity and use in many structures such as, bridges, towers, buildings and many others.

Many different shapes are used for steel structures, I-beams – these probably used the most commonly for support in a vast amount of construction. These are also used in the railroad, for rails of many different kinds. Steel can be shaped to fit the needs of the construction being done. Arcs, Tees, even bolts and tools they all have their uses. 
There are different properties that are involved in making carbon steels. These have a specific amount of alloy elements that are not too be exceeded. Carbon is one percent, copper at 0.6 percent, manganese is at 1.65 percent, and phosphorus is 0.4 percent, silicon at 0.6 percent and sulfur at 0.05 percent. These all have properties that are similar to iron, the more carbon there is the harder and stronger it will be.

Alloy steels have a higher amount of the elements than the carbon steels do. Compared to carbon steels these are tougher, more wear resistant, harder and stronger, most of these usually need to be heat treated to get the added strength provided from tempering. Stainless Steel contains about ten percent of chromium no matter what the other elements are involved. Stainless steel has three different grades to it they are austenitic, ferritic and martensitic. This determines the amount of chromium, aluminum, nickel and even titanium that is used in them.

Advantages of steel as a material to be used for structures. These include elasticity, uniformity, high strength, toughness, ductility and it can be added to existing structures. Many structures are being built using steel from steel manufacturers like Capital Steel & Wire. These structures include suspension bridges, high-rise building that needs to sustain wind and earthquake situations, and automobile parts. Having both uniformity and high strength means that the properties of the steel will not change like concrete, and that the weight of the building or structure will be less than other materials.

As for disadvantages of using steel there are a few of those as well. The biggest disadvantages are under some conditions it may lose its ductility at which time a brittle fracture could occur at stress concentrations. Buckling occurs when the weight ratio to length or a slender design is too high. Fatigue and the costs of both fireproofing and maintenance are high. Steel structures are very susceptible the elements when exposed directly to the elements. Though steel is a material that is incombustible, during a fire it does have a significant reduction of its strength because of the heat.

In summary Steel has been used for everything from tools, eating utensils, railroad tracks, I-beams in various kinds of constructions, the list of places that steel is being used is endless. Steel is superior often over concrete in both cost and weight. Steel is being used by more and more architectures for solutions to problems of things like being able to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes. Adding support and strength where it is needed even in an existing building or construction. Steel can be added for the additional strength or to reinforce what is already there.
